Adobe PDF FAQs

How do I run a full accessibility check for my PDF document?

Required: You must use Adobe Acrobat Professional 8 to run a full "Section 508 Accessibility" check on your document.

NOTE: The Adobe accessibility report will provide information on most tagging problems, but we strongly suggest that you manually check your document after you have fixed the problems found by the accessibility check.

To run the automated accessibility test, open Acrobat and follow these instructions:

  1. From the Menu Bar, click on"Advanced";
  2. Then click on "Accessibility";
  3. Then "Full Check"

From the Accessibility Full Check Dialogue Box do the following:

  1. Under the "Report and Comment Options" make sure "Create Accessibility Report" and "Include repair hints in Accessibility Report" is checked.
  2. Click on "Choose" to select the location (C drive, My Documents, etc.)
  3. Under "Checking Options" click on the "Name" drop-down menu, then select the "Section 508 Web-based intranet and internet information and applications (1194.22)".
  4. Under "Checking Options" make sure all boxes are checked.
  5. Click on "Start Checking" which will run the report.

Accessibility Report

  1. A Dialogue Box will appear indicating whether or not the scan was fine or produce any issues.
  2. Click "OK" to view the report.
  3. The report will be displayed in a split screen.
  4. The report will be on the left side of the screen; the PDF will be on the right side.
  5. The issues identified in the Detailed Report Section link to the object(s) in your PDF
    document that need(s) to be corrected.
  6. There are also Links in the Detailed Report Section which will guide you on how to repair any errors.
