How do I add descriptive text to my images?

To add descriptive text to images in Word 2003, follow the instructions below:

  1. Right click on the graphic and choose “Format Picture.”

  2. In the “Format Picture” box:
    1. Click on the “Web” tab
    2. In the “Alternative text ” box type a description.
    3. Click on the “OK” button

    Note :  For decorative images without meaningful content, alternative text should have a space, “ “ inserted in the alternative text box. 

    1. Open the alternative text box (as above);
    2. Hit the space bar once;
    3. Then click on “OK”.
