Microsoft Word FAQs

Can I use any List Bullet I want in my document?

Yes you can, but be careful to avoid the use of special characters.

Proper list formatting ensures that the necessary tags are generated to enable screen readers to recognize and announce the list to the listener. For example, the screen reader announces "Bulleted List with three items" or "Numbered list with 5 items" to help the listener visualize how the content is organized.

Use Word’s Bullet and Numbering preformatted lists as a tool to make your lists accessible.

  1. Select the items to which you wish to add numbering or bullets. (Each item should be on its own line or paragraph.)
    Highlighted list of Samhsa's agencies.
  2. Click either the Numbering or Bullets button in the Formatting toolbar.
    1. Bullets:
Highlighted list of Samhsa's agencies with bullets applied.
    2. Numbering:
Highlighted list of Samhsa's agencies with numbers applied.
