To update document properties in Word 2003, follow the instructions below:
- From the MS Office toolbar, select FILE click the “Properties” option.

- The Document Properties box opens on your screen with four tabs at the top. For 508 compliance, you must update the SUMMARY and CUSTOM tabs

- Click the SUMMARY tab first and add information to the following text boxes:
- TITLE: (Type the title of the document. Ex. SAMHSA 2009 RFA - Campus Suicide Prevention)
- SUBJECT: (Type the general subject of document such as “SAMHSA Grant Announcement”)
- AUTHOR: (Type your org / division. Never use a person’s name. Ex. SAMHSA / OPS)
- KEYWORDS: (Add five or six words or phrases separated by a semi-colon. Use buzz words that are unique to the document. Ex grant;campus;suicide;2009;rfa”. The keywords help to find the document when using a search engine.)
You are not required to fill in the properties for Manager, Company, Category or Comments.
- LANGUAGE PROPERTY Click on the CUSTOM tab to set the default language for the entire document.
- Under the property for Name, select “Language”.
- Under Type, select “Text”.
- Under Value, type in the word English.
- Next, click the ADD button.

- Once you are done, click OK. Make sure to save the document before you close.
