How do I update the properties for my document?

To update document properties in Word 2003, follow the instructions below:

  1. From the MS Office toolbar, select FILE click the “Properties” option.

  2. The Document Properties box opens on your screen with four tabs at the top. For 508 compliance, you must update the SUMMARY and CUSTOM tabs

  3. Click the SUMMARY tab first and add information to the following text boxes:
    1. TITLE: (Type the title of the document. Ex. SAMHSA 2009 RFA - Campus Suicide Prevention)
    2. SUBJECT: (Type the general subject of document such as “SAMHSA Grant Announcement”)
    3. AUTHOR: (Type your org / division. Never use a person’s name. Ex. SAMHSA / OPS)
    4. KEYWORDS: (Add five or six words or phrases separated by a semi-colon. Use buzz words that are unique to the document. Ex grant;campus;suicide;2009;rfa”. The keywords help to find the document when using a search engine.)

      You are not required to fill in the properties for Manager, Company, Category or Comments.
  4. LANGUAGE PROPERTY Click on the CUSTOM tab to set the default language for the entire document.
    1. Under the property for Name, select “Language”.
    2. Under Type, select “Text”.
    3. Under Value, type in the word English.
    4. Next, click the ADD button.

    5. Once you are done, click OK. Make sure to save the document before you close.
